Doctor Who Spinoff Wartime Gets DVD Release

The first independant Doctor Who spin off is out on DVD as War Time Chronicles starring John Levene gets a release.  Following on from the past releases like Downtime, Daemos Rising and the Mind Game Saga you will be able to add Wartime to your collection when it is released on DVD on March 6th. Now we only need Shakedown to get the DVD treatment.

Wartime Chronicles
Starring John Levene and Michael Wisher
Written by Andy Lane and Helen Stirling
Produced and directed by Keith Barnfather

During all his years working for the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT), steadfast Benton failed in his duty only once. Long ago, while on a seemingly routine delivery run for The Brigadier, he finds himself close to his childhood home where ghosts from his past have never rested easily... Trapped in a nightmare world, where past and present seem as one, will he be lost forever or can he fight his way back to reality? A reality where he is desperately needed!

Wartime has the unique distinction of being the very first independent spin-off from Doctor Who, with John Levene reprising his role from the series as Sergeant John Benton.

This 2 disc special collector’s edition also includes:
behind-the-scenes material
a brand new introduction by Katy Manning (Jo Grant) and Producer Keith Barnfather
ReUNITed - a history of UNIT)
Jon Pertwee & UNIT Live on Stage - a convention panel featuring Jon Pertwee and the UNIT team

Has Doctor Who Spinoff Class Been Axed???

According to an article in The Mirror, grain of salt not needed here, it appears the BBC will be canceling the Doctor Who spin-off Class after just one series. The ratings for Class has not been stellar as the first episode gained 600,000  viewers but tanked right after averaging around 300,000 viewers and not topping the top 50 of shows being viewed on iPlayer and the BBC late night airing was dismal as well. Plus it wasn't helped by the fact that the BBC did not promote Class well enough either.

Class was created and all episodes were written by Patrick Ness and it just wasn't the show that Steven Moffat had told us it would be. I thought it was a bit of mess filled with more teenage angst than fighting alien monsters.  If I had a choice to watch Class or Torchwood: Miracle Day I would watch Miracle Day.  Class was the fourth Doctor Who spinoff and the one that fared the worst with viewers, K-9 and Company is now happy with that news, and hopefully this pot hole in the road of Doctor Who doesn't put off the BBC from trying another Doctor Who spin-off.

Details on Doctor Who - The Contingency Club

Out now in the Doctor Who Main Range series is the second of three stories that features the 5th Doctor and his original TARDIS crew.  This time they are in 1864 and of course things do not go as planned.  You can order this audio adventure from the Big Finish website.
https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-contingency-club-1252

London, 1864 - where any gentleman befitting the title ‘gentleman’ belongs to a gentlemen’s club: The Reform, The Athenaeum, The Carlton, The Garrick… and, of course, The Contingency. Newly established in St James’, The Contingency has quickly become the most exclusive enclave in town. A refuge for men of politics, men of science, men of letters. A place to escape. A place to think. A place to be free.

The first rule of the Contingency is to behave like a gentleman. The second is to pay no heed to its oddly identical servants. Or to the horror in its cellars. Or to the existence of the secret gallery on its upper floor… Rules that the Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan are all about to break.

Written By: Phil Mulryne
Directed By: Barnaby Edwards

Peter Davison (The Doctor), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Janet Fielding (Tegan), Clive Merrison (George Augustus), Philip Jackson (Mr Peabody), Lorelei King (The Red Queen), Tim Bentinck (Wakefield/ Cabby/ Stonegood), Alison Thea-Skot (Marjorie Stonegood/ Computer), Olly McCauley (Edward/ The Knave). Details and Cover for Doctor Who Magazine 509

Out now is issue 509 of Doctor Who Magazine in which 12th Doctor will be facing off against the original Master.  You can pick this magazine where you normally buy Doctor Who Magazine.

In the latest edition, we chat to self-confessed Doctor Who fan Rufus Hound – Sam Swift the Quick in 2015’s The Woman Who Lived, and most recently the latest incarnation of the Meddling Monk for Big Finish – about how he enjoyed being part of something he personally loves so much…

“All my anxiety dissipated within the first two hours of arriving,” says Rufus of his work on The Woman Who Lived. “I have never worked with a crew that was more like a family. I have never worked alongside actors who took the work seriously, but themselves not terribly seriously, as was true of Maisie [Williams] and Peter [Capaldi], who I spent most of my time with. The director [Ed Bazalgette] was tremendous, the producer [Derek Ritchie] was brilliant. Everybody in make-up and costume were having a right old laugh. All the camera crew and whatever were offering up shots and angles, being creative and given licence to be creative, licence to turn in their best work.”

Doctor Who - The Sontaran Ordeal Review

Doctor Who:
The Sontaran Ordeal
By Andrew Smith
Starring Paul McGann

The fourth and final disc in the Classic Doctors: New Monsters box set sees the 8th Doctor taking on the Sontarans. Yes the Sontarans.  When this box set was announced I was scratching my head why the Sontarans were included in this set as the Sontarans are as much Classic Who as the Doctors featured in Classic Doctors: New Monsters.  So I’m not so sure why they are featured in this set even if they are using the redesigned Sontarans they are still a Classic Who monster so that doesn’t really cut it when they could of used some other creature.
