My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #16

As time goes on we may experience a
film in a different way. Personally my top 25 list is in constant
flux with movies moving up and down the list. Usually the moves are
minor, moving a few spots up or down. A new incoming movie on my
list will obviously push others off the list. This ever changing
list is bound to be different 10 years from now.
16 - The Matrix (1999)

A. Anderson is a man living two lives. By day he is an average
computer programmer and by night a hacker known as Neo. Neo has
always questioned his reality, but the truth is far beyond his
imagination. Neo finds himself targeted by the police when he is
contacted by Morpheus, a legendary computer hacker branded a
terrorist by the government. Morpheus awakens Neo to the real world,
a ravaged wasteland where most of humanity have been captured by a
race of machines that live off of the humans' body heat and
electrochemical energy and who imprison their minds within an
artificial reality known as the Matrix. As a rebel against the
machines, Neo must return to the Matrix and confront the agents:
super-powerful computer programs devoted to snuffing out Neo and the

The Matrix is an outstanding film. It was original and its
groundbreaking special effects completely outdid George Lucas and
hisreturn to the Star Wars franchise - The Phantom Menace
released the same year. The idea is pretty complex and exciting,
spawning two sequels. While the sequels were a mixture of
disappointment and confusing concepts, they did stretch the ideas set
up in the original and did a fairly good job with the story.
I love movies that are complex and have alternative realities. Not
everything is as it seems and the entire idea is so simple yet woven
into a complex structure of a story, it really stands out as an
excellent film. Ultimately it is the action that pushes the whole
thing along and the superhero like powers that everyone possess
almost places this in the superhero genre. It is about someone who
is more than he appears and he alone can save the human race – or
something like that.
Whether you like the sequels or not, they are mostly the same as the
original except amped up quite a bit. The visually stunning battle
between Neo and Smith was a true climax in The Matrix. In fact this film is so visually stunning with its incredible stunts and artistically pleasing gun battles.
Taking
that a step further with hundreds of Smiths battling one Neo was
impressive but a bit hilarious and silly. Those sequels fall well
short of my top 25 but I don't hate them. I don't think the sequels reduced my opinion of the original but it
is hard to not think of the three films as one story. I feel films
lower on my list may have been better films than this one but since
the visuals were so powerful and I remember being impressed to a
great degree, I have to put this up high on my list. You can't beat an intelligent concept that is beautifully shot.
